Xi Li: The Transcendence Labyrinth of Idols
December 6th, 2022
Master of Fine Arts Student
Project Description:
The Transcendence Labyrinth of Idols encourages us to question ideas of idol worship that are often channelled through celebrities and popstars within the contemporary digital landscape. Traversing individual obsession and then into broader structural narratives of mythology and spirituality, Li develops an approach between fantasy and belief. Through a combination of theoretical criticism and artistic practice, Li uses this approach to clarify the distinction between the self and the symbolic. The Transcendence Labyrinth of Idols creates an immersive spectacle of mythological imagery that bridges the historical with the surreal.
The exhibition includes large digital print installations, videos and sculptures. The sculptures were 3D Printed at DRH, as separate parts, where Xi then glued the pieces together, sanded them, and then painted on top.
If you want to check it out, the exhibition is currently on display at Te Tuhi, and will be exhibited till January 29th, 2023.
