Anson Sieu – The Conscious Building

The Conscious Building is a research project delving into the exploration of integrating innovative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies into the architectural realm. At the core of this thesis lie the concepts of adaptive architecture, responsive AI, and “true conversation,” which is investigated within the context of a 1:1 scale architectural living space. The AI system harnesses its capabilities from cutting-edge technologies: Stable Diffusion, Riffusion, Inworld AI, and Whisper AI. This study endeavours to address the question of how AI can be integrated as a component by the designer to create the next generation of adaptive architecture.

What distinguishes this work is its emphasis on fostering a unique form of interaction and emotional connection between the occupants and the AI system. In contrast to traditional digital systems characterised by pre-programmed responses, this AI-integrated installation delivers adaptive audio-visual outputs that dynamically and intuitively respond to the unpredictability of human inputs. Within this thesis, “true conversation” is defined as a “multiple loop” system where occupants engage in the exchange of information with the Inworld AI and the architectural space itself. The result is an environment where every interaction feels authentic and meaningful.
